Luminis Come To Catskills Halloween

There are bands you put on because you want volume, and there are bands you put on because you want weather.

Luminis is weather.

They come out of New Jersey, which is already a gothic sentence if you say it at the right hour. They started the way a lot of the good ones start: in love with a sound that did not have enough rooms in this country. Nightwish. Within Temptation. Epica. Lacuna Coil. Evanescence. Delain. Leaves’ Eyes. The whole cathedral of it — choir stacked on guitar, drums that behave like weather systems, a voice that can go operatic without apology.

Tara’s voice is the center of the thing. Not decoration. The architecture. Early on they cut an original EP, From Within — “Into My Sin,” “Nightfall Child,” “The Other Side of the Mirror” — melancholic, theatrical, a little haunted around the edges. Then they kept doing what this kind of band has to do if they mean it: they played. Dingbatz. QXT’s. The rooms where the black lace and the leather jackets already know the words.

Tribute is a cheap word until you watch someone treat the catalog like liturgy. Luminis does not shrug through “Mother Earth” or “Alone” or “Nemo.” They build the orchestra in a club that was never designed for an orchestra. They make a Tuesday in Newark feel briefly like a European festival night, which is a kind of magic and also a kind of labor.

That is why they belong in the Catskills in late October.

Not because we needed “a metal band.” Because this weekend is supposed to feel like the veil got thin and somebody brought a choir. Because the market is oddities and steampunk and goth and handmade strange, and Luminis is the sound of that room when it stops browsing and starts listening. Because a resort in East Durham, with the leaves going copper and the pub going late, is exactly the sort of slightly impossible place this music has always wanted.

If you already know them, you know the feeling: the first stacked chorus, the lights a little too violet, somebody in the front mouthing every word. If you don’t know them yet, start with the voice. The rest of the weather arrives on its own.

The weekend is free to walk into. The music is not free in the other sense. It costs attention.
